State officials are watching closely today as a company begins placing sand in a small test section of Grand Lake St. Marys to see if it can fight bad algae with good algae.
Marysville-based Algaeventure Systems will make four applications in the 2.5-acre test site near the lake’s west bank.
"We’re looking at anything that can help make that lake healthier," said Mark Forni, assistant director of the Ohio Department of Agriculture, which is funding the $25,000 project.
If it works, the state would have at least one weapon to fight the blue-green algae, or cyanobacteria, that are showing up in lakes and ponds across the state from Lake Erie to Shawnee State Park.
